Density

Canopy density - Refers to the density of the branch canopy. A dense canopy casts relatively dense shade, a crown with a moderate density casts medium shade, and an open canopy casts light shade.Open canopy - A branch canopy (e.g. Pine) which is open and allows filtered light to penetrate to the ground below. Example

Moderately-dense canopy - This branch canopy (e.g. many maples) has a medium density compared to other trees. Example

Dense canopy - A branch canopy which is dense (e.g. Callery Pear), allowing little light to penetrate and reach the ground below. Turf and other sun-loving plants grow poorly beneath the canopy of these trees. Example
