Web Taxonomy consists of a collection of graph-based tools for visualizing, designing, developing, documenting, and deploying many different kinds of applications. This Web site was created using these tools. Currently only a prototype, it demonstrates several principles, including content management, new kinds of development tools, and dynamic web site generation. All these tools are developed on the same architecture and platform. All use an object database management system as the core content storage and management facility. The database management system is designed to store the complex, highly-variable data structures needed for these applications. All system components are written in the Java language, and use Web-based delivery systems for deployment of software and tools. The tools are based on the assumption that people naturally react to graphic visualization of data much better than character-based presentations. Since the underlying object data structures really are graphs (nodes and links) they lend themselves well to a graphic presentation. Graphic tools rely heavily on asthetic presentation. They attempt to create an "object world" that is specific to the domain in which a particular individual is interested (whether that individual might be a soil science professor, a county agent working in fruit crops, a student studying genetics, or a programmer developing software).
