| abstract: | Almost 20 years ago, an article was published in the Florida Grower and Rancher entitled, "Tomatoes - Death of an Old Industry and Birth of a New One". A machine harvest concept as the new industry never materialized, but the tomato industry not only survived but also prospered. Yields have doubled and the value has increased from less than $80 million in 1970-71 to over $600 million in 1988-89 (5). The mulched gradient system provides an unexcelled level of production efficiency while the concerns of environmentalists, conservationists and society have weakened the sustentation of that system. |
